4 tips for writing a successful baker resume

Before you start writing, make sure you know how to write a resume in a way that best emphasizes your strengths.

The baking industry includes many different specializations, so competition is guaranteed to be fierce. To help your baker resume sell like hotcakes, we provide 4 tips to help you stand out and highlight your qualifications.

Follow these tips to write a strong baker resume regardless of experience.

1. Highlight your hard skills in the skills section of your resume

Working in a bakery requires a good number of hard and soft skills. Hard skills are job-specific abilities learned through experience and training, such as chocolate tempering and baking machinery operation.

You can typically find the hard skills required for a position in the “Requirements” section of the job description. These skills are valuable because many are needed to perform a certain job at a high level, plus every bakery has its own set of requirements and standards.

The following hard skills are relevant to a wide variety of careers in the baking industry:

  • Frosting making
  • Balling dough
  • Knowledge of chemistry
  • Baking machinery operation
  • Chocolate tempering
  • Customer service
  • Packaging

If you’ve just started your baking career, you can focus on soft skills in your resume instead. Soft skills are traits that positively affect how you work and interact with others in a professional setting.

Experience in related industries like customer service will have given you transferable skills such as communication, the ability to deal with customers, and being adaptable in fast-paced environments.

2. Target your baker resume to the job post

Many employers skim resumes for keywords that match the job description. Adjusting your content to address the needs of the bakery you want to work for will help your resume stand out.

Simply pick out the qualifications required for the job, and include the ones you have in your resume. This shows the employers that you are the right person for the job and have paid attention to the job description they posted.

Employers in the food industry often use application tracking systems (ATS) that scan large numbers of resumes at once for specific skill-related words to speed up the hiring process. Over 70% of applicants are eliminated by ATS software before their resume even reaches a hiring manager, and including keywords in your resume helps make your resume more ATS-friendly.

3. Showcase your relevant certifications

Certifications are often required for food preparation and specialization. Listing out your certifications showcases your core competencies and willingness to learn different things.

There are certain relevant certifications that may impress the owner or hiring manager of a bakery. A bar license, a certificate from a cooking class, or a mixology training certificate are all useful in the food industry.

Here are some helpful certifications to include in your baker resume:

  • BRCGS Certification
  • Certified Decorator
  • Certified Master Pastry Chef
  • State bartending license
  • Food handler permit
  • Certified kitchen cook

You can add these certifications in your resume summary, resume objective, or list them out in a separate certifications section depending on how many relevant ones you have. Any certifications above two should have their own section.

Understanding how to list certifications on your resume is just as important. Include the following information underneath the name of certification if applicable:

  • Name of the organization issuing the certification
  • Completion date
  • Expiry date
  • Location

4. Include resume achievements

Measurable achievements are proof that you impacted your previous businesses positively. The best way to add achievements is to use hard numbers paired with action verbs.

Here’s an example of an applicant’s listed experience:

  • Invented 4 new pastry recipes, ultimately increasing customer sales by 13% over 3 months

Quantifying a category with a number helps the employer understand the weight of the accomplishment along with the amount of workload you can handle. Strong action verbs add purpose and convey your expertise.

Quantify your resume by including these hard numbers:

  • number of customers
  • percentage increase in business ratings
  • amount of money you saved using a certain method
  • number of new bakers you trained
  • amount of time you saved by prepping the bakery
